The following sermon was preached by Rev. Calum I. Macleod on the Sabbath Morning of 7th of June, 2009. The life of Elijah is here continued. Like in our own daythere was a famine; not only of food, but more grievously, a famine of the Word of God. Ahab had married Jezebel and there was apostasy throughout the nation. A great judgement came upon Israel and the Saints along with the unbelievers had to suffer the consequences… “sometimes also we have to bear the indignation of The Lord”. The famine was everywhere but Elijah was provided for. And, in the widow woman of Zarephath we see a picture of faith; she believed God’s prophet and acted upon the promise that God had made. The barrel of meal did not waste, neither did the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sent rain upon the earth.
The text is 1Ki 17:1-16… (Verses 8-10) And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. (This recording contains the entire service).
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath.
