The following sermon was preached by Rev. Calum I. Macleod on the Sabbath Morning, 23rd of August, 2009. Upon Carmel, The Lord had proved that He alone is the true and living God but Jezebel now seeks to murder Elijah. See how evidence alone will never change the hearts of men; more than arguments or reason or even miracles are needed. Yet this depraved woman is not unique; unbelief is our crowning sin by nature; “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” So, Elijah fled to the wilderness and asks for the Lord to take his life. Was his faith failing? Was he, like Jonah, escaping his responsibility? Never! Elijah may be downcast but still, he is a man of prayer. He is strengthened by angels and speaks with God in the mountain of Moses.
The text is 1Kings19:3-4… And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life
