Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

The following sermon was preached by Rev. Calum I. Macleod on the Sabbath Morning 6th September 2009. When death comes, each of us will leave this world in one of two ways. Ahab was a covetous king whose heart was fixed upon the passing pleasures of this fallen world; prepared even to countenance murder in order to gratify his worldly lust for possessions. He died the fear filled death of a godless rebel. Elijah’s heart, in contrast, was jealous only for the Glory of The Lord and Elijah left this world, literally, in a blaze of glory, without ever tasting death he was translated into the presence of God to be with Him forever. Christ’s prayer for us is…“that where I am, there ye may be also.” Will this be the desire of your heart also when you come to tread the verge of Jordan?

The text is 2Kings 2:11…And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
