Get thee behind me, Satan

The following sermon was preached by Rev. Calum I. Macleod on the Sabbath Morning 20th September 2009. This sermon looks firstly at Peter’s confession of Christ, secondly, Peter’s rebuke of Christ and finally, Christ’s rebuke of Peter. In verse 17, Peter is a blessed man who knew and declared the revealed truth of God but in very short space of time he became an instrument of Satan; seeking to undermine the declared will of his Master. Though he had spoken foolishly on many occasions, The Lord dealt graciously with Peter and later he would write, “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God” We too should prayerfully consider our words before we speak and ask ourselves; do we savour the things that be of God?

The text is Matthew 16:17,23…And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven…..But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Get thee behind me, Satan
