Full of meaning: Arthur Pink says about this saying: …is but one word in the original, yet in that word is wrapped up the gospel of God; in that word is contained the ground of the believer’s assurance; in that word is discovered the sum of all joy and the very spirit of all divine consolation.

True meaning:it is not a cry of hopelessness but victory.

  1. The end of his redeeming work:

God’s righteousness is satisfied:

God’s wrath is placated:

Forgiveness is purchased: Paul writes to the Colossians that God through Christ has ...forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of the debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside nailing it to the cross.

God is reconciled: Paul to the Colossians: And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death.

  1. The end of his and our enemies:

Paul writes to the Colossians…And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

The devil:

Sin: the condemnation that sin deserves, the power of sin in the life of his people and at last the presence of sin!

Death: The Death of Death in the Death of Christ!
