Question 87

What is repentance unto life?
Repentance unto life is a saving grace, whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, doth, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, with full purpose of, and endeavour after, new obedience.

Introduction:

False vs true repentance:

First vs daily repentance:

  1. Required by God:

Joel 2:12-13: Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments…

Acts 2:38: Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the Holy Spirit…

Acts 17:30: The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

  1. Granted by God:

His gift: As the Gentiles came to Christ the church glorified God, saying, ‘Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life’.

His delight: In Ezekiel 33:11 we hear God saying: ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked tur from his way and live’. Jesus confirms this: ‘Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance’.

His Word:

His Spirit: After promising to remove their stony hearts and give them a heart of flesh God says: Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations.

His glory: In the passage of Ezekiel God explains that he does this not for their sake but his. We saw that the result of the Gentiles’ converting to Christ was worship.
