Born of God

Reading: John 3: 1 – 21

Text: So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. (Romans 8: 12 – 17 ESV)

His Spirit: Jesus attributes this work to the Spirit

His agency: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again…

His will: But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

2. Necessary act:

We are dead: …dead in the trespasses and sins

We are unable: The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

We are lost: …no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born of the Spirit.

We are unwilling: you refuse to come to me to have life…

3. Transforming act:

Faith in Jesus:Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God
